Lako Vision signs video card distribution deal

Melbourne-based Lako Vision has finalised a deal to distribute Osprey video cards in the Australian market.

Lako Vision, a division of video editing and sports graphics company Pineapplehead, will be the sole distributor of the cards, which employ a server-based technology that allows the simultaneous downloading of video files from the Internet or local area networks.

Company managing director Evan Kourambas said the move was in anticipation of market growth as broadband connectivity becomes more popular.

"We see our relationship with Osprey as embryonic at the moment, but in the future this technology will be very commonplace," Kourambas said.

"Osprey dabbled in the Australian market a few years ago, but was unsuccessful because the market was too immature for the technology. But with the availability of digital subscriber lines (DSL) and cable connection, that market is about to come into its own."The video cards will help make Internet video streaming a mainstream technology for the desktop and ultimately the home user, he said.

"At the moment, we are looking at the corporate-cum-heavy user specialist market, but over time that will move into the consumer market."Lako Vision will distribute Osprey's five video cards; the Osprey 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000. The company is taking orders for the first three cards now, with the 1000 and 2000 models available early next month. They will range in price from around $500 to $3500.

"It has real potential for video casting and Osprey is a market leader in this area. We are focused on image capture and editing and in video capture and editing. This technology gives you a new medium."
