SDS confident sliding in ERP solutions

Since partnering with ERP vendor Damgaard mid last year, specialist financial systems company Scalable Data Solutions (SDS) has gone from strength to strength, according to SDS's managing director, John Crew. The integrator has taken eight orders in Australia for the Damgaard Axapta ERP solution, with three sites already live, making it the biggest Damgaard dealer in Australia, according to Crew.

With orders spread from Adelaide and Melbourne in the south, through regional NSW and Sydney, up to Brisbane, SDS is bolstering its presence in the ERP space, signing up a number of new customers for its Damgaard offerings.

Having just signed an agreement with a chemical company in Queensland, SDS has finalised an Axapta ERP integration for sliding doors manufacturer Centor Products.

With the GST looming, Centor was looking to migrate its existing cumbersome system to one that would not be viewed as a cost strain, and in stepped SDS.

"We found ourselves viewing our IT expenditure negatively, as an operating overhead, instead of an enabling, strategic investment," said Nigel Spork, CEO of Centor.

As time constraints were an issue, Crew said the project took just "four weeks from go to whoa", and Damgaard came to the party with a lot of support.

The hardest part of the integration, according to Crew, was the data conversion of nearly a million general-ledger transactions.

"You wouldn't generally want to do it in that time," said Crew. "The guys on-site were working pretty long hours."In light of recent industry mutterings that many ERP systems will fall over if the adoption rate within the company is not fully realised, Crew is confident in SDS's training approach.

"People think training is about pushing buttons but it's not. It's about the cultural change for the business. If you work with them properly and spend the time training them, it's going to work very well," he added.

Only a recent implementation, Centor's Spork is optimistic about the productivity gains the new system will offer estimating savings of $40,000 per annum in labour, $25,000 in IT overheads and $10,000 in printing/mailing costs.
