Oz e-tailers close gap

Australian online shopping sites are catching up to their US counterparts in the local Web market, according to latest figures by online analyst Red Sheriff.

Australian pure play retailers such as dstore and wishlist are rapidly breaking down the market share of US giants such as Amazon, according to July ratings. dstore's business more than doubled and only 16 per cent of customers visited the Amazon site exclusively in July, compared with 56 per cent the month before.

"The strength of standardised global offerings is coming under increasing pressure from local operators," said Ian Lowe, Australian general manager of Red Sheriff. "This was highlighted in our July results, which saw nearly 20 per cent of Australians who visited Amazon also visiting dstore."

Pure-play e-tailer wishlist is also competing strongly, with July sales increasing by 109 per cent. Competitive pricing and broader product offerings are amongst the reasons for the increase, according to Lowe.

The July figures also highlight convenience as a major factor in influencing shoppers, as more and more people access the Internet from work - up 3 per cent on last month.

The figures also show that, despite the doom and gloom forecast for the industry, online shopping continues to grow steadily.dstore has recently partnered with Telstra to deliver online shopping through, using WAP-enabled mobile phones.

David Gold, CEO and founder of dstore, said the partnership presented "significant opportunities" in the mobile commerce market.

"dstore is focused on providing delivery mechanisms which will make online shopping as easy and convenient as possible for consumers," he said. "Our relationship with Telstra will help us tap into this emerging market."
