Lycos in joint launch of Philippines portal

Lycos and Singapore Telecomm-unications are launching an Internet portal for the Philippines through their joint venture, Lycos Asia, the companies announced last week.

Lycos Philippines features localised content, in collaboration with local news organisations and local Internet startup companies, Lycos Asia said in a statement.

Under an agreement with Philippine mobile phone company Globe Telecom, the new Lycos portal will also be accessible to users of Globe's WAP services.

Lycos's Philippines-specific search engine is the latest of 80 localised sites it has built in 29 countries. Lycos Asia operates portals in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, and launched a portal in India in July. Lycos faces fierce competition in the rapidly growing Asian market from Cable & Wireless HKT and local portals.
