Enterprise networking giant Cisco Systems has launched a Content Delivery Networking (CDN) strategy to provide a comprehensive content-based networking solution to service providers.
Cisco will target network service providers (ISPs and telcos), overlay content service providers, Web, e-commerce, ASP/hosting, streaming and storage service providers with the CDN system, announced recently.
The system is capable of delivering large volumes of data such as video applications and large files across a WAN, private network, virtual private network (VPN) or the Internet to branch or remote sites, according to Philip Belcher, Cisco Asia Pacific's director of enterprise sales.
CDN would "solve" network congestion via "application-aware" networking, which assigns specific data with "background" or "peak" class, Cisco executives said.
"This application is going to drive [networking] growth. These are the fastest-growing tangible applications solving industry problems," Belcher claimed. Existing Cisco resellers and integrator partners could capitalise on CDN by exploring wide business opportunities with Cisco. "This allows resellers to implement more creative services around our total infrastructure," said Belcher. "Existing channels will be able to pick up on this quite quickly."
Resellers could also be assured of strong sales, he believed, saying the Internet would inevitably define the channel's customer base.
"We are looking to the Net for real business advantage," Belcher said of Cisco's marketing strategy. "This is an opportunity to make a business the global village, not just the enterprise."
He declined to provide a local profit forecast for the initiative, saying revenue would depend on the range of networking switches and content systems implemented by a client.
Cisco's CDN system portfolio includes content distribution and management, content routing, content switching, content edge delivery and Intelligent Network Services.
Cisco's CDN distributors are Tech Pacific, LAN Systems and Express Data.
