Cisco's recertification plans

Cisco-certified professionals and associates have up to three years to upgrade their skills or lose their accreditation under a global policy adjustment made to Cisco's Career Certification Program.

According to executives from Cisco Systems Australia, the recertification policy applies to all levels of Cisco professional certification.

"In today's fast-paced Internet economy, recertification is a tangible indication, to both IT professionals and the organisations that employ them, that our career certification holders are current on the latest technology trends," said Tom Kelly, Cisco's vice president of worldwide training.

While resellers' potential reluctance to adopt the policy change, due to loss of Cisco-accredited staff to competitors, "was a concern" to Cisco Systems Australia, a company spokesman warned they "risked going out of business if their [technicians] didn't have on-the-ground networking training".

"If their skills are not absolutely behind the eight-ball in any way, then obviously this is not ideal for our channel partners," he said.

The spokesperson added the onus was on the end user, not the vendor, to ensure Cisco-accredited technicians upgraded their skills. "Cisco is not passing the buck but making sure [our partner's] networking and product integration skills are current."
