As competition wound up for the first week of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games last Friday, websites began touting their own record-breaking performances.
On Friday IBM's official site for the Games had clocked up over 4.4 billion hits worldwide since the site went live bringing page views up to 76.1 million. IBM claims people were spending on average around 17 minutes on the site.
The three most popular athletes on the IBM site for the week were Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband, Australia's Ian Thorpe and swimming sensation Eric Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea.
Besides just browsing the site, Internet purchases of Olympic tickets has also increased for the official site.
SOCOG announced on Friday that online sales have accounted for more than $25 million, with 370,000 tickets sold in the past two months.
Only around 400,000 tickets to Sydney events remain available, down from more than one million tickets available less than one week ago.
Nielsen//NetRatings' Web Index has polled the week for Australian Net surfers with Olympics.com taking line honours ahead of Channel Seven's i7 site.
It would appear from Web Index's results 5 per cent of Australians can't spell "olympics" with an "s," and inadvertently are ending up at online paint store Olympic Paints. But despite this obvious typo Australian surfers are only spending an average of one minute on the olympic.com site.
