Novell strikes anti-virus deal with Network Associates

Novell is hoping to hitch its wagon to a rising star and has teamed up with the ever-growing Network Associates (NAI) to integrate its systems with NAI's anti-virus technology.

As part of the agreement, NAI will include a NetShield for Novell application in its Total Virus Defense suite, and Novell will include the anti-virus technology in NetWare for Small Business 4.2, slated for release by the end of the year. Novell users will also have access to Network Associates' AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team) services.

"It's about not only protecting the desktop or the server or the gateway, we want to make sure that you are protecting every entry point within a network," said Sal Viveros, director of marketing for Total Virus Defense for Network Associates. "When a virus is detected on a NetWare server, that server can basically send out an alert."

Some analysts feel that the deal benefits both companies. NAI will gain access to Novell's large user base and Novell gains access to NAI's growing number of security products.

"Obviously there is still a pretty substantial Novel installed base," said Steve Foote, senior vice president of the Hurwitz Group. "(And) "I certainly think it's good for Novell. Odds are Novell will extend the relationship over time."
