Analyst predicts VPN services boom

In a boost for local virtual private network (VPN) integrators, research group Forrester has released a study into VPNs, predicting implementation and interoperability issues will "send enterprises scurrying for a managed service offering".

The report claims VPN solutions are still plagued with problems such as broken extranet functionality, due to interoperability issues with vendor offerings.

"VPN gear from different vendors doesn't interoperate, business partners tear their hair out trying to set up encrypted tunnels to share data," the report said.

The report also claims the technology remains too complex and expensive, making it a difficult option for most companies.

The report also suggests that, in a growing market, the increasing popularity of managed solutions will cause a shake up of a market overburdened with highly complex offerings. It predicts that, in order to remain afloat, carriers must expand their VPN solutions and that mono-carrier VPNs will be eliminated.
