Just Jeans finds US vendor a ‘neat fit'

Just Jeans Group has decided to use a US vendor to implement a new range of e-commerce Web sites, leaving out any opportunity for local developers and integrators.

The clothing retailer chose InterWorld Corporation, the software vendor chosen to power the e-commerce engine of Australia Post's new services, to launch Web sites for Peter Alexander Sleepwear, Just Jeans and Jacqui E, all owned by the Just Jeans Group.

Rick Milinski, vice-president of InterWorld Asia-Pacific, said the vendor has been very successful in targeting companies in the Australian retail space.

"We engaged Just Jeans, pitched our solution to them, and it just happened to be the right product at the right place at the right time," he said. "Their original site had been quite successful, but they want to extend their brand to include Peter Alexander."

The package Just Jeans Group purchased is pre-built and will be configured by five InterWorld consultants and five employees of Just Jeans. This will involve compiling the e-commerce database from the retailer's existing catalogues and adding the graphical elements that will give the site the look and feel of the retail outlet. The eventual aim is for Just Jeans Group staff to eventually be able to maintain the site themselves.

"Fundamentally we are a software and sales organisation so we often partner with other organisations to provide services," said Milinski. "But in this operation we've chosen to only use one consultant from eCentric, sub-contracted to us for a fixed period, and essentially we are doing all the systems integration work ourselves."

Milinski said the sites should prove a success as Just Jeans Group managing director Howard McDonald views the e-commerce channel as "just another store". InterWorld is now trying to convince the retailer to use Australia Post's new fulfilment services, as Milinski believes it would prove a "neat fit". Just Jeans Group was unavailable for comment.
