A new level of Mac reseller has been born with PC dealers moving to become Authorised Apple Solutions Resellers.
The businesses represent a new tier in the Apple channel. Most sell and service PCs but CCG Camera house in Sydney's CBD has also been accredited to sell Apple products.
The list includes CDG Computers, Computer Discounts, Teksolution Computers, Hi Q Computers, Image Life, AOS Office National and Ecom computers.
York Gao, manager of Teksolution Computers in Hornsby said he had taken on the Mac reseller role in part in response to market demand, but also to further his knowledge within the IT industry.
"In Hornsby, most of my customers are small-to-medium businesses. I networked the computers for one of my clients who is in the printing industry. At one point, they found they were being given Mac disks and had to send the business elsewhere, and I realised the PC and Mac markets should be joined together."
Gao said becoming a Mac reseller allowed him to provide a total solution. He said the advantage over being exclusive to a particular platform is that he can work in both Mac and PC environments.
"We decided to increase the range of our business into markets that haven't yet been developed. If you want a technology solution, I believe the PC and Mac joined together will provide future opportunities for the industry. The language is similar, it is just a different format."
Ken Cruickshank, sales representative at Computer Discounts at Erina, said the company stocked the whole range of Apple products through distributor KH.
"It is a market opportunity for us -- an add-on for our business," he said. "Apple is not represented locally."
Cruickshank admitted it was still a bit of a learning curve. In the face of Apple's poor sales forecasts, he remains optimistic.
"Apple has the products there, we will just have to see how it goes. Obviously we wouldn't take them on if we didn't think there was something in it.
"PCs are still our core business -- this is an extra sales channel in the same way many businesses now also sell products over the Internet."
