Primus on reseller hunt for domain business

Primus Telecom has launched its Web-based domain registration service and is expecting 70 per cent of its registrar revenues to be achieved through reseller agreements.

The carrier has launched PlanetDomain, a Web site that offers top-level domain registration and related services and is looking for resellers such as Internet service providers, systems integrators and Web developers to be the front counter for domain sales.

PlanetDomain is a fully automated domain registration system where users can search, select and pay for domains online in several languages and currencies. Resellers can have an interface to the PlanetDomain engine integrated into their Web sites free of charge, to offer the services to customers. The reseller can customise its offering to whatever languages, currencies and other options it wishes, and will receive a 20 per cent commission for every registration that it passes through.

John Dowell, Primus Telecom's general manager of e-commerce and online services, said the carrier is looking to offer value-added services such as Web hosting, broadband access and, eventually, catalogues and transactions to profit from the service.

Dowell believes the real benefits of becoming an ICANN-accredited registrar will come into effect when the .com.au market is deregulated. Currently, this domain space is held exclusively by Melbourne IT, but Dowell is hoping a new revision by auDA will offer the space to other players. If this happens, he has promised PlanetDomain will drop the registration price for the .com.au domain by 50 per cent.

"It's deplorable that the monopoly can go on," he said. "All we're asking for is auDA to get its act together."

Dowell said the carrier would leverage off its existing ISP partners to find more resellers and had received significant interest from the local channel, but declined when asked to name any resellers already signed up.
