Compaq inspired by eSec for security

eSec has been appointed as Compaq Professional Services' preferred IT security provider in an ongoing agreement that could prove to be a cash-cow for the listed security services company.

Under the terms of the agreement eSec will provide Compaq's large corporate clients with managed security services including eSec's Managed Firewall and Managed VPN services, managed Intrusion Detection Systems, consulting, penetration testing and e-commerce security, a statement released by eSec said.

Tim Brewin, southern region manager for Compaq's Professional Services division, claims Compaq had to make the decision to develop the security resources in-house or partner with a company like eSec.

Meanwhile eSec has been out to partner with a large outsourcing or IT services company for some time according to Saxon Hill, eSec's CEO, who admits the company is "lucky" to have penned an alliance with Compaq.

The ongoing agreement will be reviewed every six months, with eSec hoping to leverage Compaq's existing customer base and clout in the industry, Hill said.

The two companies also intend to use the alliance to win new business, claims Hill, although the details of how this will be achieved has yet to be discussed.eSec's offerings will be branded as Compaq services under an OEM style agreement, with eSec standing to grow substantially from the partnership. However, Hill does not believe this will occur at the detriment of the company's services ability.

"We basically sell Service Level Agreements and if we over promise, and then under deliver, it reflects very badly on us and certainly doesn't do Compaq's reputation any good," said Hill. "There will be issues around the management of growth, but they're problems we're looking forward to having quite frankly."

The company has doubled its staff this year to around 45 employees and Hill hopes to increase this to about 100 by this time next year. "I'd be surprised if we didn't," he said.

Compaq's Professional Services Division is worth around US$150 million per year in Australia and New Zealand to the company, said Brewin.
