Why WAP is flopping

Wireless application protocol (WAP), the mobile technology hyped as being the first step toward high-speed data on mobile devices, has seen slow adoption in Australia, according to IDC research manager Joel Martin.

As expected, users have not warmed to WAP-enabled devices due to poorly designed user interfaces, and small screens and keypads. Similarly, Australian users are typically aware of the expense of being constantly online and also hold concerns about making purchases over the Internet.

But not all hope is lost for WAP developers, according to Martin, who expects the arrival of new, more functional devices, price adjustments and more intelligent content provision to fuel much-needed demand for the technology in the near future.
