Nortel releases new Ethernet switches

Nortel Networks has announced a series of new Ethernet switches aimed at capitalising on the rise of IP telephony.

Part of Nortel's Services-Centric Networking strategy, the switches target SMEs looking to converge their voice and data communications.

The first product family available, the Passport 1600 routing switch, are fixed-port, hardware-based Layer 3 routing switches for the wiring closet and network core.

Also announced were the Passport 8300 Ethernet switch, a wiring closet modular switch offering Power-over-Ethernet, and the Baystack 425 switch.

Nortel will also release a product line of Power-over-Ethernet Baystack 5000 switches early next year.

Nortel's director of enterprise networks, Rick Seeto, said Nortel was looking to increase its business in the SME market while changing its image.

"We're trying to change our image as a traditional PBX/voice vendor for enterprise," Seeto said. "Our path is moving to the IP telephony market."

The vendor has begun an Asia-Pacific roadshow to promote the switches, having invited channel partners to screenings of Terminator 3 in Sydney and Melbourne.

"We didn't previously have products like a core switch to succeed in the SME market," Nortel product marketing's, Jae Won Lee, said.

"We'll also have an end-user promotion for the Passport 1600. That is, the customer [also] gets a free BayStack.

"I'd expect we'll have similar promotions for the others."

The Passport 1600 routing switches include the Passport 1612G (12 x SFP GBIC ports), $1149 per port, the 1624G (24 x SFP GBIC ports) at $701 port, and the 1648T (48 x 10/100 + 4 x SFP GBIC ports) at $207 per port.

The BayStack 425 (24 10/100BaseTx ports + 2 Combo 1000BaseT/SFP GBIC ports) will be available in September for $100 per port.

The BayStack 5510-48T (48 1000BaseT + 2 SFP GBIC ports) will be $220 per Gigbabit port, and the BayStack 5510-24T (24 1000BaseT + 2 SFP GBIC ports) will be on sale in October at $315 per Gigabit port.

The Passport 8300 will also be available in October.

All prices are based on the current exchange rate and may not be final. All prices exclude GST.
