SYDNEY, Australia – Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] has been named “Hardware Vendor of the Year” at the 2003 Telecomms Awards, run by CommsWorld magazine. The awards – now in their third year - salute the thousands of Australian and New Zealand businesses that are bringing new telecommunications products and services to users.

This year’s winners were announced at a dinner in Sydney’s Darling Harbour last night. An independent panel of seven experts from the Australasian telecommunication industry - representing government, industry associations, venture capitalists and consultants - judged the awards and only awarded the prize in each category if all the judges were unanimous. Nortel Networks beat Cisco Systems, 3Com, Avaya and Lucent Technologies to win in its category.

“We’re thrilled to receive this recognition from our peers, who are some of the toughest people to impress,” said Steve Wood, president, Nortel Networks Australia and New Zealand. “

"I congratulate our ANZ personnel for working hard to achieve the levels of product quality and customer service that are necessary to secure a independent industry award of this kind.

“This is our second important award in four months – in May our Wollongong-developed Mobile Location Centre technology was recognised for Innovation in the iAwards – and we’re delighted to continue that momentum,” he said.

The CommsWorld 2003 Telecomms Awards were judged by: Shara Evans, managing director of Telsyte; Geoff Letts, research director for the Yankee Group; Allan Horsley from the Australian Communications Authority; Rosemary Sinclair, managing director of the Australian Telecommunications Users Group; and Richard Chirgwin, editor of CommsWorld.
