LaCie has launched a new line of desktop FireWire hard drives that support faster 800Mbps speeds. The d2 drives range from 200GB to 500GB capacity and comply with IEEE-1394b standards. That means faster transfer speeds for Windows 2000, XP and Mac OS X users. The drives feature a metal alloy that dissipates heat. The drives do not need a noisy fan. They are easily attached and detached even while a computer is running. The drives ship with three cables (USB 2.0, 6-pin FireWire to FireWire 800, and FireWire 800 to FireWire 800), and necessary software for Macintosh and Windows computers. The range will be available in February from World Best Technology and Express Online. The 200GB drive will sell for $999, the 400GB for $1899 and the 500GB drive for $2199.
