LEGATO Delivers Policy-based Snapshot Management to Extend Leadership in High-Performance Information Recovery

NetWorker™ PowerSnap™ with NetWorker 7.1 Provides An Open Architecture and Unified Solution For Heterogeneous Customer Environments

Sydney, Australia September 9, 2003 - LEGATO Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a worldwide leader in enterprise storage management software solutions and services for Information Lifecycle Management (ILM), today announced the new release of NetWorker PowerSnap and NetWorker 7.1. NetWorker PowerSnap seamlessly integrates instant backup and rapid recovery using third-party snapshots with NetWorker. NetWorker PowerSnap provides simple, policy-based snapshot management, integrating and orchestrating snapshots with applications, such as Oracle and Exchange. LEGATO NetWorker 7.1 also delivers the ability to initiate Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) for backup and recovery.

“As companies look to move up the data protection index, IT professionals are looking at technologies such as snapshots to help them quickly recover critical data. Snapshots, however, do not get IT to a total data protection strategy. They are only part of an overall solution,” said Steve Kenniston, Technology Analyst of the Enterprise Storage Group. “The challenge with having two strategies for data protection and recovery poses a data management challenge. Having a solution that provides the intelligence to automate the management of snapshots as well as backup –the traditional data protection strategy– helps IT operate more efficiently.”

LEGATO NetWorker PowerSnap’s open architecture provides a unified solution for heterogeneous customer environments that simplifies snapshot management across multiple combinations of applications, servers, operating systems, and storage platforms.
With the availability of NetWorker PowerSnap Modules and NetWorker 7.1, customers can leverage the benefits of:
• Comprehensive management of third-party snapshot capability from EMC CLARiiON, IBM FAStT Storage Servers, Sun StorEdge Availability Suite, STK D Series, and coming soon, EMC Symmetrix DMX
• Application protection with snapshot-aware NetWorker application modules for Oracle, Exchange, and at the end of the year, SQL and SAP
• Complete lifecycle management of snapshots as part of LEGATO’s approach to
Information Lifecycle Management (ILM). LEGATO’s ‘cradle-to-grave’ ILM approach focuses on how businesses can more effectively manage, protect, retrieve and use their data in today’s business climate.

In addition to now offering Windows Server 2003 support, NetWorker 7.1 also extends data protection for Linux Enterprise Editions of Red Hat and SuSE on IA32 and IA64 architectures.

“LEGATO NetWorker 7.1 integrates management of snapshot backup and recovery with traditional DAS, NAS, and SAN data protection,” said Victoria Grey, vice president, Information Protection Business Group, LEGATO Systems. “NetWorker 7.1 provides the intelligence and automation to orchestrate third-party snapshots with applications using snapshot management policies to capture logically consistent data for application recovery. This functionality empowers customers to have one information protection solution for their entire environment, reducing IT overhead and delivering lower TCO for data and application protection.”
