Hotspot ahoy

Hotspot ahoy has announced it is rolling out Wi-Fi hotspots to cover a quarter of Australia’s marinas.

The Brisbane-based service provider will deliver permanent and roaming Wi-Fi services covering marinas and the surrounding precincts including public access areas. It also intends to offer location specific content such as event and weather information.

The first site, Queensland Cruising Yachting Club in Brisbane, has already been deployed. Future locations including sites in northern Queensland, the Gold Coast and Sydney are expected within the next six months.

“We see hotspots as a much needed alternative to data services via mobile phones,” Anyport managing director, Michael Fairweather, said. “They are much more cost effective and relatively inexpensive to deploy.”

Users signing up to Anyport services will also be able to access the services of other wireless providers through global roaming agreements because it is a member of Wi-Fi clearinghouse, Hotspot Global.

“Anyport’s entry into the Wi-Fi market is indicative of the rapid deployment of Wi-Fi in niche markets,” Hotspot Global CEO, Mike Whitehouse, said. “We’re seeing real world uses for hotspots that make locations profitable more quickly by solving actual needs.”
