Mincom does the math on massive defence opportunity

Australian-born software vendor, Mincom, claims to be armed with around $400-$500 million of new sales opportunities after winning a $150 million deal with the Australian Defence Force.

The Australian Department of Defence has been a key Mincom customer for about 12 years. The new deal saw Mincom beat offers from several of the world’s largest software vendors such as SAP and PeopleSoft to supply the ADF with a defence logistics solution.

The ADF will standardise on Mincom’s Defence solution for the next 10 years to manage the supply chain across all of its operations.

Mincom CEO, Alan McElrea, said the decision would propel the company to lead military logistics solutions globally.

This software has already been used by the ADF in its operations in the Solomon Islands, East Timor and the Middle East. It has also been deployed by the Canadian Defence force and several defence agencies in the Asia Pacific region.

But a spokesperson for Mincom said the ADF deal would prove a catalyst for many more deployments around the globe. Within days of the ADF announcement, Mincom was receiving calls from the British Defence Force requesting a briefing on the software.

The British Defence Force saw the systems in action during the Iraq conflict, the spokesperson said, and was impressed by its functionality.

The meeting will take place during a forthcoming visit to Australia by a prominent British General, who will be briefed by Mincom’s general manager of defence, Ian Mcdonald, as well as representatives from the ADF.

“Interoperability of systems between members of military alliances is becoming very important for defence forces,” the spokesperson said. “We expect these opportunities to generate around $300-$500 million globally for Mincom.”
