Acer signs Harvey Norman for retail push

Acer has signed a deal with Harvey Norman and will make a concerted push into the retail space through its 131 outlets across Australia.

The PC vendor claims to have grown 343 per cent in the retail sector during calendar year 2002 and hopes this deal will help it to continue its rapid progress in that market.

“Dell has been targeting Harvey Norman with an advertising campaign so it [Harvey Norman] needed a branded organisation like Acer that offers flexibility in going to market,” Acer’s channel manager, Greg Mikaelian, said.

“Our e-commerce system allows customers to come in for a quote and go through a process that ends up becoming an order," Mikaelian said. "The system has a high level of customisation, is efficient and quick to market. That appealed to Harvey Norman."

Acer revenues rose to $170.5 million in 2002 from $105.4 million in the previous calendar year.

Managing director, Charles Chung, is planning to make Acer the number one PC vendor in Australia by 2007 and wants to make it a billion-dollar organisation along the way.

Speaking at a Channel Forum in Sydney, Chung said Acer had established itself as the top government and education vendor during 2002 but would continue to set its sights on achieving overall top spot.

“Our goal is to become the leading vendor in the marketplace by making ourselves the easiest company to deal with,” he said.

Acer would continue to commit resources to e-commerce because he saw it as a key differentiator in terms of service and support," Chung said.

Mikaelian said Acer was targeting a $100 million growth in channel revenue during 2003 - $30 million in the SME space, $30 million in corporate contracts and $40 million through government and education deals.

Its SME plans include an aggressive Pentium 4 campaign in its volume notebook program, further growth in education has been assisted by its recent appointment to a 15,000-seat Queensland education panel and increased corporate contracts will be targeted through close collaboration with tier-one resellers such as Fujitsu, Commander, BCA and Volante.
