Demand for Wi-Fi Hot Spots Sparks Provider Landgrab

Service Providers Compete to Capture Most Desirable Locations, says META Group

SYDNEY, Australia, (September 17, 2003) By late 2004, Wi-Fi hot spots will become a viable addition to the enterprise remote-access strategy, according to META Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: METG). As hot-spot build-outs and interprovider roaming agreements continue to expand, leading enterprises will procure Wi-Fi services in a bundled fashion, along with other offerings such as cellular and internet dial services.
"The market for Internet access via public Wi-Fi hot spots has seen an influx of offerings from service providers over the past year", said USA META Group Wi-Fi analyst Chris Kozup. "The promise of embedded Wi-Fi in every laptop, coupled with the demand for broadband speed, has sparked a virtual landgrab, with providers hoping to capture the most desirable hot-spot locations.
As the hot-spot market grows, enterprise customers should evaluate providers on their ability to offer quality coverage, interprovider roaming agreements, and bundled services, as well as their long-term viability. Initially, most enterprises will be best suited to a usage-based
payment plan, as opposed to a subscription plan. Aggregators and carriers will be the most successful providers, offering the highest-quality networks and broadest coverage.
