Telecom New Zealand has signed a $150 million outsourcing deal with Lucent Technologies for the supply and management of its 027 mobile network.
TNZ officials said the five-year agreement with Lucent was the most extensive managed service agreement in the world among mobile network operators.
Under the agreement Lucent will take charge of network planning, design, deployment, support, and overall management of Telecom's 027 CDMA network.
The company will also supply the equipment to expand the network, that it built 18 months ago. The network gives customers high-speed data links and access to Telecom's Internet service, Xtra.
Some 50 Telecom staff will be transferred to Lucent on July 1.
Lucent New Zealand general manager, Ian Gardner, said there were significant opportunities to transfer staff given the international operation of the company.
