IBM’s Thinkpad T40 sports a new 1.5Ghz Centrino chip coupled with a 40GB hard-drive, 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo. It sports a small form factor, a 14-inch SVGA+ TFT screen, yet still manages to squeeze in a full-size keyboard. The plastic casing feels flexible yet sturdy in the atypical IBM robust style. It boasts a very long battery life: five hours and 12 minutes under a moderate workload, and six hours under a light workload. It comes standard with Windows XP, an integrated 56K modem, integrated 10/100 Ethernet and integrated wireless via 802.11b. Acer has gone for a classy, fully-featured notebook as opposed to a tidy package. The TravelMate 800 sports a 1.6GHz processor, a 15-inch display and a very speedy Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics chipset with DircetX compliance. The unit sports 60GB hard-drive, 512MB DDR-RAM and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. Its battery life is four hours and 25 minutes and the thin line makes it very portable unit. The TravelMate 800 comes standard with integrated 56K modem, integrated 10/100 Ethernet and integrated wireless via 802.11b. Windows XP is onboard and a one-year warranty. Fujitsu’s LifeBook S6120 features a 1.4GHz Intel Pentium-M processor and 855GM chipset, and comes with 256MB DDR RAM, 30GB HDD and a CD-R/RW drive. The notebook contains an integrated Bluetooth module enabling connection to any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone or PDA for total mobile connectivity. The security of the LifeBook S6120 has been enhanced with Fujitsu’s Security Panel. It sports a full-sized keyboard and 13.3-inch TFT display and features integrated Intel graphics with Dynamic Video Memory Technology. It has a seven-hour battery life with an additional bay battery (10.8V 4000mAh) and supports Microsoft Windows XP Home/XP Professional. Contact Fujitsu PC to locate your nearest distributor. Hi-Grade new performance-oriented Ultinote 6600DH notebook forgoes the Centrino chip for a 3.06GHz desktop P4, 60GB hard-drive and a gigabyte of RAM. The Ultinote sports a Toshiba DVD-RW drive to make up for a short battery life, 59 minutes at standard load. The unit has a 15-inch SVGA+ TFT and a 64MB GeForce4 400 Go and comes standard with Windows XP. In terms of connectivity, the Ultinote 6600 has integrated 10/100 Ethernet, integrated 56K modem and two-year warranty against “accidental damage”.

The Tecra S1 is Toshiba’s flagship notebook for corporate and business users. It features the 1.6GHz Intel Pentium-M processor as well as the 855PM chipset and the PRO Wireless/2100 WiFi wireless networking. With 512M of memory, applications can hit their straps and the big 15.1-inch active matrix screen delivers excellent 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution. The units ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics controller can handle games at near desktop speed at lower resolutions and Toshiba’s 60G MK6022GAX hard drive provides a neat storage bevy. The most impressive feature is the Matsushita UJ-810 DVD-Multi burner, a combination of DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW all in one drive which also burns CD-R and CD-RW discs.
