Former Cisco employees get behind new Aussie start-up

Citrus Solutions specialises in security, hybrid IT and digital collaboration

After spending 17 years across various roles at Cisco, David Barker took the initiative to start up his own hybrid IT, security and digital collaboration business Citrus Solutions.

Based in Sydney, Citrus has established partnerships with companies such as Atea Systems, Bitglass, Cisco, Checkpoint, Macquarie Telecom, Onelogin, RedSeal, RingCentral, Tenable, vArmour and Nice in Contact.

The company specialises in a broad range of solutions such as enterprise networking architectures, security, customer experience platforms, digital collaboration solutions, as well as design, implementation and services support capabilities.

Prior to starting up the new business, Barker spent 17 years across various roles with Cisco, and was most recently the managing director of VCE in Australia and New Zealand until 2015, when he left the IT industry and pursued investing in start-ups before venturing back into the IT sector again.

“I missed the IT industry and the challenge, so I decided to set up my own IT business,” Barker told ARN.

Currently, Citrus has 17 staff, predominantly former Cisco colleagues, with more than half maintaining Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certification including business development manager Dan Barker, along with solutions consultants Nalaka Karunaratne, Kiran Vuppalapati and Abu Hadee.

“We’re passionate about technology’s ability to transform businesses in a meaningful way,” Barker said.

“Citrus Solutions is in the business of collaborating with our clients to develop IT infrastructure solutions that are aligned to their goals and enable them to adapt in this ever-evolving IT industry.

“We don’t plan on being a huge company with all the necessary resources and skills, instead, we’re forming alliances with other partners in the industry -- where we can draw on complementary skills from both sides.”

Barker said it would like to delve further into the IoT space, after achieving a partnership with Cisco and IoT certification.

“We see there’s a huge upside in this part of the market across areas such as transport, agriculture, facilities management and so on,” he said. “Security is also one of the areas that we believe will be critical for any enterprise, and we’re spending a lot of time in creating a portfolio of security solutions.”
