Unveils new FAS systems for entry-level and distributed enterprise needs.

Sydney - September 24th 2003

Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), today announced new FAS (fabric-attached storage), systems designed for entry-level and distributed enterprise needs: the FAS250, FAS270, and FAS270c (clustered). The new systems provide what today's data-intensive enterprises demand from their storage systems: affordable reliability, centralised management, simplified backup and disaster recovery capabilities, scalability, and serviceability - and starts at an attractive price point around US$10,000. The new systems also feature NetApp simplicity and a unique approach to hardware design that puts the massive power of NetApp into a 3U form factor fully integrated within the disk shelf unit, while retaining classic NetApp simplicity. These features translate into low total cost of ownership (TCO) and high flexibility, enabling customers to quickly and easily deploy the new systems pervasively throughout their organisation (even in remote locations with little or no IT support) and to seamlessly upgrade their data to additional and/or larger NetApp storage systems as their data needs change without migrating their data.

"Network Appliance is setting a new standard for entry-level enterprise storage systems with our introduction of the FAS200 series," said Mark Santora, senior vice president of Marketing at Network Appliance, Inc. "Now customers can enjoy the features and associated benefits of data-centre-class storage in their workgroup and department environments for less than a typical non-scalable workgroup system. Our new entry-level FAS systems make general-purpose OS based servers - often used as workgroup storage devices accessing only one environment such as Windows(r) or UNIX(r) - pale by comparison. We believe that these systems will set a new benchmark for what customers should expect in terms of functionality from all parts of their storage infrastructures."

Product Details
The FAS250 and FAS270 establish new reliability, availability and scalability thresholds for entry-level enterprise storage and were designed from the ground up to handle today's data-intensive workgroup, department and distributed enterprise applications. The systems are the industry's first unified (SAN/NAS) storage appliances for the entry-level and are available immediately.

The FAS250 is designed for NAS and/or iSCSI SAN environments with support for iSCSI, CIFS, NFS and HTTP protocols. The FAS250 system supports up to 1TB via 36-, 72-, or 144GB Fibre Channel drives.

The FAS270 is designed for NAS and/or Fibre Channel/iSCSI SAN environments. It offers up to 4TB capacity, higher performance than the FAS250, as well as optional high availability (clustering) in a single box.

The FAS200 series utilises Broadcom's SB1250 MIPS processor, which features dual 650MHz cores and comes with two onboard 10/100/1000 copper NICs, a copper Fibre Channel tape port and a serial port. The MIPS architecture and low power dissipation enable NetApp to create a "shrunken head" FAS system that fits into a very small package requiring no additional power or cooling beyond that used by the disk shelf unit. The system comes in a small 3U form factor in either a rack or tower configuration.

The FAS200 series can support up to 48TB of storage via a simple head (or controller) swap. The FAS200 family can be rapidly upgraded in place without a fork lift upgrade or data migration, providing complete investment protection.
