Dell on Wednesday announced its first sub-$1000 PC, available immediately.
The company is selling the Dell Dimension 2350 for $999. The box comes with a 2.0GHz Intel Celeron processor, 128MB of DDR-SDRAM, a 30GB hard drive, 48x Max CD-ROM, 17in CRT monitor as well as Windows XP Home Edition, WordPerfect Productivity Pack and Norton Anti-Virus 2002. A standard delivery fee of $99 applies.
According to Dell Australia spokesperson Nicole Gemmell, the offer is for a limited time and consumers must place an order for the product by 2 May 2003.
She said the company could offer such a low price due largely to the reduction in component costs, coupled with the fact the Dimension 2350 was "edging towards the end of its product life".
Dell is also offering a promotion on the Dimension 4550. That PC is selling for $1999 and comes with 2.4GHz Intel Pentium4 processor, 256MB DDR-SDRAM, 30GB hard drive, SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 sound card, 48x Max CD-RW, 56Kbps modem, and 17in flat panel monitor, together with Windows XP Home Edition and WordPerfect. This offer is also valid until 2 May.
A one-year warranty applies to both machines. Gemmell said customers can expect a seven to 10 day wait for delivery of the products following the placement of an order.
