It’s been a technical scramble, but Microsoft’s distribution partners for its Open Licence Value program (OLV) were ready to roll with the new SMB licensing program as it kicked off today.
Distributors Ingram Micro, Tech Pacific and Express Data had a timeframe of a couple of months to implement the new Microsoft-mandated process for fulfilling OLV licensing orders.
While Express Data expected that its fully automated online service, IT Agent, would not be available until Monday, the distributor would process OLV orders through its account managers until then, e-business manager, Peter Stein, said.
The timeframe for creating the new interface and getting technical support from Microsoft had contributed to the slight delay, he said.
With 200 resellers already registered as software advisors, Microsoft was confident that customers would be able to purchase OLV licences from today, licensing marketing manager, Thomas Kablau, said.
The software vendor hopes to have 400 resellers signed up by the end of the year, he said.
Express Data had already run two test runs through it's online IT Agent site, Stein said.
“The automated process includes the Bixtalk XML transfer which reduces delivery time on licences from 48 horus to an average of four hours,” he said.
Tech Pacific will handle the new licensing program through a call centre environment, software and networking category manager, Lorraine Cowan, said.
It was important that there was maximum human contract for the new system of license processing, she said.
The turnaround time on the licensing would depend on end users submitting fully completed and signed agreements, Cowan said.
Once the end users paperwork was complete, Microsoft should be able to turn it around in 24 to 48 hours, she said.
The OLV program offer staggered payment terms to small business.
The scheme pays resellers commission of between 10 and 12 per cent.
The three-year OLV agreement, available to the 5-250 seat business segment, is modelled on the terms currently available for enterprise level customers.
Under OLV, customers can pay for licenses and Software Assurance, or just Software Assurance on its own.
