A new hard disk-based digital music player, it is smaller and lighter than its previous model and Apple’s iPod. The Gigabeat G20 contains a 20GB hard disk drive capable of storing 332 hours of music, encoded at 128Kbps, according to Toshiba. It measures 89.5mm x 76.5mm x 12.7mm. Part of the reduction is due to the hard disk drive becoming a solely internal drive on the new player. The previous model featured a removable hard disk although, with the supplied USB2.0 interface, the switch to an internal hard disk seems like a good trade-off for the lesser volume.
Toshiba plans to put the G20 on sale in Japan during October, where it will cost about $US424. There are no concrete plans to sell it overseas but export will be considered if it sells well in Japan.
