Toshiba Australia’s Information Systems Division (ISD) has announced record quarterly and annual results after strong notebook sales pushed its last quarter revenue to over $100 million.
The company sold 40,423 notebooks during the last quarter (ending March 31), a 23 per cent jump on the same quarter last year.
While Toshiba also sells projectors, PocketPCs and accessories like memory cards, notebooks account for about 95 per cent of their sales, Toshiba ISD general manager, Ralph Stadus, said.
For the year, Toshiba tabled a 16 per cent increase in volume over its previous best year (2000).
Stadus said the opening of two telephone support centres in April last year had boosted sales.
“Both of these [centres] have been well received," he said. "One is for our [end] customers, that takes about 4000 calls a month. The other one helps our channel customers get quick answers for their customers, and that takes about 7000 calls a month.
“We didn’t have anything like this [level of support] before.”
Toshiba’s wide range of notebooks also allowed it to supply every segment of the market, he said.
“We currently have about 20 models, and we usually maintain that number,” Stadus said.
“The functionality of notebooks today is about equal to desktops, and we move a lot of volume in the home high-end notebook market,” he said.
Cultural changes in work and modern lifestyles were also responsible for notebooks’ growth, Stadus said.
