Cirrus Communications goes direct with wireless NBN challenger

The direct fixed-wireless play doesn't mean the company plans to wind back its partner program

Fixed business-grade wireless broadband service wholesaler, Cirrus Communications, is making a run at the retail market with an offering it hopes will provide local businesses with an alternative to the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The move sees the telco, which has been providing wholesale fixed wireless broadband services to its network of partners for over a decade, pitch its new C2 Direct wireless services offering direct to business customers.

The C2 Direct offering will see the company focus initially on selling connectivity to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) with five to 50 employees in what refers to as the “critically underserved” industrial estates of Australia’s large cities.

“NBN certainly meets a need in the market – but it is a very long way from offering a compelling solution to businesses dependent on service availability. Frankly, their services are either residential-grade or very expensive,” Cirrus Communications CEO and co-founder, Dr Eric Heyde, said.

While the new offering sees the wholesaler go direct to end customers, the company has no plans to wind back its partner program.

“Over the past ten years we have concentrated exclusively on delivering wireless connectivity to businesses primarily though channel partners,” Heyde said.

“Going forward we plan to continue and expand our partner model – but C2 will also become an important plank in how we address the market.”

The company, which is focused exclusively on services to businesses, claims to have thousands of microwave link services in operation providing services with bandwidths up to 1Gbps delivered from hundreds of transmission sites in 10 of the largest population centres around the country.
