Damage to a major fibre data cable between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast has disrupted internet services from at least two telcos, TPG and iiNet.
As of 5:45AM on 22 September, fibre damage had been identified in the Maroochydore area, with fibre technicians engaged to perform repairs, according to TPG’s service status page online.
TPG also said that due to the unplanned outage, some of its customers connected to exchanges in Mooloolaba, Noosa Heads, Maroochydore, Caloundra and Wurtulla may be experiencing home phone or internet connection difficulties.
TPG apologised for any inconvenience.
Likewise, TPG subsidiary, iiNet, said on its network status page that on-net ADSL customers in Caloundra, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore may be disconnected from, and unable to reconnect, to the internet.
“Affected customers will be unable to access websites and check email. Please be aware Netphone customers may be unable to place or receive calls,” the company said.
“Engineers have identified the fibre break location and splicing may require further excavation works to reach the optical cable. Technicians are working to restore the issue with high-priority. There is no ETR yet,” it said.
It is understood that the damage to the cable occurred near a point of presence in Maroochydore as a result of excavation work.
While TPG and iiNet are among the internet service providers affected by the cable damage, it is understood that the cable itself is operated by a third party.
At the time of writing, fibre crews were still working to repair the damage.
