FalconStor’s VirtualTape Library Solution Rapidly Gains Global Market Acceptance and Industry Recognition

Industry Leading Storage Vendors, Media and Analysts Validate Superiority of FalconStor VTL Solution

Sydney, Australia – November 1, 2004-FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: FALC), a leading developer of network storage infrastructure software solutions, today announced that the company’s VirtualTape Library (VTL) solution continues to gain global market acceptance and industry recognition as the VTL solution of choice by storage vendors, as well as the industry media and analyst communities.

Howard Marks, in the cover story of the September 16th issue of Storage Pipeline, entitled “A Marriage of Convenience” stated, “After spending a few months with these VTLs, it was no surprise that three of our vendors had chosen FalconStor's IPStor VirtualTape Library to power their appliances. Powerful, flexible and easy to use, FalconStor has hit a home run.”

FalconStor’s unique VTL solution, powered by the company’s award-winning IPStorÒ technology, consolidates the management of backup resources while enhancing the reliability of backup operations and accelerating the speed of recovery, without requiring businesses to change their existing backup software and policy. FalconStor’s VTL leverages industry standard high speed disk to provision virtual tape drives and libraries to backup servers attached to an iSCSI/IP or Fibre Channel storage area network (SAN) to maximise performance and return on investment.

Marks also noted, “Although the VTLs from all three FalconStor OEMs run basically the same software, they've taken different approaches to hardware and packaging, yet all finished near the top of the pile. Their flexibility and ease of use mean we'd be pleased to have any one in our labs.” Marks concluded, “But because only one can wear the crown, we're awarding our Editor's Choice to the IPStor-based EMC Clariion DL300 Disk Library for capacity, support, and overall fit and finish.”

Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) Lab, a leading industry analyst firm providing strategic guidance and service to technology vendors, IT professionals, venture capitalists, and institutional investors, recently completed hands-on testing and analysis of the FalconStor VTL solution. The following is a brief excerpt of the report, written by Tony Asaro and Brian Garrett, which is available in its entirety via the FalconStor website at

ESG Lab hands-on testing confirmed, “…working with the FalconStor VTL solution is just like working with a real tape library—only better. FalconStor VTL is better than tape since backup performance to FalconStor VTL is up to four times faster than backing up to tape, and a selective restore can be orders of magnitude faster.”

ESG Lab found that FalconStor VTL works seamlessly with popular backup applications, and emulates and supports a wide range of tape libraries, enabling it to fit into current processes used today for barcode cataloguing and offsite vaulting. FalconStor VTL increases reliability, as compared to tape, by using RAID-protected hard disk drives instead of magnetic tapes in a library. This eliminates the chance of media errors and robotic failures, and decreases the chance of human error. This increased reliability is essential when you need it the most—during a restore while end users are waiting. Customers can be more assured that data can be recovered quickly and accurately. Additionally, FalconStor supports remote replication, enabling customers to make copies of backup data for greater levels of protection and centralising backup processes for remote and departmental servers.

The report also noted that ESG believes that VTL will become a requisite part of the data centre since it helps to solve the five major storage/backup problems encountered by customers: backup performance, recovery performance, consumption of human resources, validation of successful backup/recovery, and media management. According to the report, “ESG Lab was very impressed with the FalconStor VTL; it is an excellent solution and should definitely be on a customer’s shortlist of products to evaluate for D2D backup.”

ESG will be holding a public Webinar on November 2nd at 1:00 PM Eastern to review the testing results of the FalconStor VTL solution. To register for this one time only event, visit

FalconStor VTL continues to gain rapid recognition from industry leading storage vendors, distributors, resellers and solution integrators delivering storage devices powered by FalconStor’s VTL software solution. In North America, FalconStor is currently working with Acropolis Technology Group, Bell Microproducts, Ciara Technologies, Dynamic Network Factory, ION Computer Systems, MaXXan Systems, Midrange Computer Solutions, Inc. and the Storage Server Group. In Europe, FalconStor has established strategic business relationships with SYSTEMAT, eSeSIX Computer GmbH and SM Data, and in the Asia/Pacific market, with Systex Corp., and Acer, Inc. in Taiwan.

FalconStor’s ongoing interoperability testing with leading hardware and software solutions ensures seamless integration of VTL into an existing IT environment, while optimising the overall performance and functionality of VTL and other technologies used by FalconStor customers today. Ongoing efforts have resulted in certification with NetApp® NearStore nearline storage systems and the NetApp Data ONTAP™ operating system, HP OpenView Storage Data Protector, HP ProLiant DL580 server, HP StorageWorks MSA1000 disk array and HP StorageWorks ESL E-series tape libraries, as well as Sony Electronics’ SAIT drives and PetaSite storage systems. Most recently, FalconStor’s VTL completed interoperability testing under IBM’s TotalStorage Proven Program, as well as certification with Engenio Information Technologies.

FalconStor also works with leading backup and recovery software from vendors such as Legato, Veritas, and BakBone, to enable 3rd party backup software to be seamlessly installed directly onto a VTL appliance, eliminating the need for a dedicated backup server. FalconStor’s VTL solution can also connect to and manage a variety of tape libraries, including the IBM 3494 Tape Library, for import and export of virtual tapes to and from physical tapes.
