Samsung develops thinner notebook optical drive

Samsung Electronics has developed an optical disc drive for notebook computers that is 25 per cent thinner than existing drives, and also lighter and more efficient, according to the company.

The new drive, which is now available to notebook PC makers, is 9.5 millimetres high compared to 12.7 millimetres in most current notebook computer drives.

Samsung said it weighed 145 grams, roughly 35 per cent less than most current drives and also featured a power-saving mode that can cut power consumption by about 20 per cent over current drives.

These are three of the four most important areas for a notebook computer drive, the fourth being drive speed.

Size and weight are important because manufacturers like to make their machines as small and light as possible while lower power consumption means longer battery life.

The SU-408 drive can write to both CD-R and CD-RW discs at 8X speed, but cannot write to DVDs.

It can read CDs at 24X with an average access time of 100 milliseconds and read DVDs at 8X with an average access time of 110 milliseconds.

The SU-408 drive can read several types of DVD and CD including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-Rom, DVD-Video, CD-R, CD-RW and CD-ROM.
