Megaport strikes east with Los Angeles link

Establishes new capacity between Sydney and LA

Australian interconnectivity provider, Megaport (ASX:MP1), is looking east, to the West Coast of the United States, in a bid to cater for growing demand.

The company, which is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) told shareholders on 9 May that it has delivered capacity between Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, USA.

According to the company, enabling the new route on the Megaport Network is key for customers wanting to utilise key cloud nodes outside of the Australia and New Zealand region.

Megaport said that, by providing access to any cloud node across its platform, the Sydney to Los Angeles route enables a geographical differentiator to connect to multi-national cloud nodes from one physical interface.

“I’m pleased to be announcing this new international route, with the Oracle Cloud node now part of the North American Megaport fabric,” said Megaport chief commercial officer, Belle Lajoie. “This means that A/NZ enterprises will now have a dedicated and reliable way to access Oracle’s bare metal cloud infrastructure (Fast Connect).

“This is really exciting for Megaport customers in all regions, as it delivers yet another solution for MP1’s global customer base,” she said.

According to the company, Australia is the most mature market in Megaport’s global footprint and, as such, enabling this new capacity for customers and partners is valuable for its ecosystem as a whole.

“Enterprises now have a platform to grow outside of the Australia-New Zealand region while leveraging a cost effective, low latency solution,” Megaport said.

The move comes just weeks after the company announced its cloud connectivity collaboration arrangement with Oracle.

The deal is aimed at giving Megaport and Oracle provide a way for enterprises to create dedicated and private connectivity to Oracle Cloud services that can scale rapidly with changing business needs.

Under the arrangement, Oracle customers can obtain access to the Megaport global network through the Megaport portal in more than 20 major markets in Asia Pacific, North America and Europe with 150 points of presence.

"Oracle is a major innovator of public cloud infrastructure, as evidenced by the announcement of their latest cloud offerings at Oracle OpenWorld 2016,” said Megaport chief, Vincent English, at the time. “Its loyal base of large enterprise customers, global reach, and focus on developing faster, better, and more cost effective services make it the perfect partner to enable with our elastic interconnection services.

“In the new era of cloud-enabled IT, enterprises require a cloud provider that can power a full breadth of integrated services and provide end-to-end support with applications (SaaS), platform (PaaS) and compute and storage infrastructure (IaaS),” he said.
