Dell EMC’s back-up and recovery arm, Spanning, has extended its data centre presence to Sydney, in response to A/NZ enterprises’ adoption of cloud technologies including Microsoft Office 365 business applications.
A spokesperson for Spanning by Dell EMC confirmed with ARN that it is hosting its first data centre in Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Sydney facility.
"Spanning's services are built on Amazon Web Services, and we are leveraging their regional facility in Sydney," the spokesperson said.
In a statement, the company mentioned that starting 15 February, Spanning’s data protection services will be available from a data centre in Sydney. This data centre is the second of Spanning’s, having unveiled the first one in Dublin, Ireland in September last year.
“We were thrilled to have Office 365 users across Europe join the Spanning family, knowing they could count on our backup and restore solution for Office 365 while maintaining compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
“Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re continuing to expand our global SaaS data protection solution to better serve Australia and New Zealand,” the statement read.
According to Spanning by Dell EMC vice-president and general manager, Jeff Erramouspe, the expansion is driven by the needs of A/NZ organisations with business-critical data, such as government agencies and centres for higher education, to protect their Office 365 data from sync errors, malicious acts, such as malware and ransomware, and human error.
“This is important because companies using Microsoft Office 365, not Microsoft, are responsible for recovering data lost for these reasons.
“We have been focused on helping organisations protect their SaaS data from negligence, error and external threats like ransomware since 2009. Our cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery products were built to solve this problem and we’re thrilled to bring Office 365 data protection to A/NZ,” he said.
The company added that the new data centre is compliant with Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), enforced by the Privacy Act, so customers can easily back-up and restore data while maintaining compliance in the region.
The data centre is also expected to provide some “latency and efficiency gains” when backing up, restoring, and exporting data for A/NZ customers.
