Telecommunications giant Telstra has announced the first round of developers to benefit from a $4.25 million cash donation and $350,000 in bandwidth grants that are being made to encourage the development of applications that require broadband connectivity.
The successful applicants are developing Internet-enabled applications targeting sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education and multimedia. Ideas funded by the scheme range from communication portals for health practitioners and their patients to real-time livestock information for the beef industry.
Telstra said that it would match contributions from elsewhere in the telecommunications industry dollar for dollar. It has already promised up to $15 million in grants over the next five years.
