Maxtor to build hard disk factory in China

Hard disk drive maker Maxtor will begin construction of a manufacturing plant in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou next month, adding that it would invest $US200 million in the facility over the next five years.

Construction of the 74,300 metre factory will be completed during the second half of 2004, Maxtor said.

Singapore will, however, remain the centre of Maxtor's manufacturing operations, the company said.

The Suzhou manufacturing facility will be used to produce desktop hard drives to be sold in China while Maxtor will continue to make high-end server and desktop hard drives in Singapore, the company said.
