ACCPAC takes on retail channel for Simply Accounting product

Computer Associates’ subsidiary, ACCPAC, has ramped up its efforts to take on the small business accounting software market, signing up its first local distributor, and announcing that Harvey Norman will carry its Simply Accounting product.

Phoenix IT Distribution signed up as national retail distributor for Simply Accounting in August, and has already sold the product into Harvey Norman.

The product is expected to hit the retailer’s shelves next week.

Simply Accounting was previously available through ACCPAC’s online store or its 50-odd solution provider partners.

The move to distribution was necessary in order to take market share from “the two giants” of SMB accounting software, MYOB and Quicken, ACCPAC’s new distribution and retail sales manager, Jacquie Strudwick, said.

Phoenix had been signed because of its strength in software and reach into small business, she said.

With more than 10,000 registered copies of Simply Accounting in Australia, Strudwick said ACCPAC was aiming to gain another 15,000 users within 12 months.

The company was seeking to “aggressively grow” its network of solution provider partners, and would add further distributors “where appropriate”, she said.

While Phoenix would cover retail distribution, ACCPAC was considering signing distributors who could sell the product as part of a PC system. ACCPAC will also look for a New Zealand distribution partner, Strudwick said.
