Australia's Total PC Monitor Market Falls 17% from Q2 2004, Finds IDC

 • 06 December, 2004 15:00

NORTH SYDNEY, December 6th, 2004 - The Q3 2004 Australian total PC monitor market declined by 17% sequentially from a unit shipment perspective from the second quarter of 2004, with the branded market declining 7 percentage points more than the OEM market. The share of LCD monitors in the overall market continued to grow, with LCD monitors accounting for almost 61% of total unit shipments in the quarter.

IDC has found that while the third quarter is traditionally the slowest quarter in the calendar year from a monitor shipment perspective, Q3's dismal performance was an anomaly attributed mainly to the drastic and frequent price drops of LCD monitors over the course of the quarter. The branded market suffered as resellers were apprehensive about retaining overpriced stock in a market where prices depreciated at an accelerating rate. However, the flux in LCD prices paved the way for some Tier 2 branded monitor vendors to gain market share, while Tier 1 branded monitor vendors were unable to keep up with the price drops.

"The volatile pricing of LCDs is expected to wind down and monitor shipments should resume run-rate in the fourth quarter of 2004 in line with seasonality. However, IDC notes that the future of the monitor market is fraught with various obstacles. The growth of notebooks and the longer life-cycle of the LCD monitors will impede the growth of the monitor market," said, Mercie Clement, Associate Analyst for PC Hardware.

"The Q3 2004 market saw very notable changes in vendor rankings with LG regaining the number one position in the branded monitor market with 18.0% share. Samsung fell into second position as it finished with 15.5% share of units shipped. BenQ climbed up to the third spot with 12.3% while Mitsubishi moved up from seventh position into fourth place, accounting for 10.9% share. Rounding out the top 5 was Philips which lost three percentage points from Q2 2004, to finish with 10.7% share," added Ms. Clement.

LG 18.0%
Samsung 15.5%
