Stolen medical information affects 90 per cent of all industries: Verizon

Impacts 18 out of 20 industries examined in new report

Medical information is being stolen from 90 per cent of industries according to a new report from Verizon.

The telco giant’s 2015 Protected Health Information Data Breach Report found most organisations outside of the healthcare sector do not realise they hold this type of data.

The report analysed breaches involving more than 392 million records and 1,931 incidents across 25 countries and found the problem affected 18 out of 20 industries studied.

Verizon senior analyst, Suzanne Widup, claimed many organisations are not doing enough to protect this highly sensitive and confidential data.

“This can lead to significant consequences impacting an individual and their family and increasing healthcare costs for governments, organizations and individuals. Protected health information is highly coveted by today’s cybercriminals,” she added.

The report also showed the number of external and internal actors involved in these breaches is nearly equal with just 5 percentage points difference, indicating a large amount of insider misuse.

Verizon said the main way this data is stolen is theft of lost portable devices like laptops, tablets and thumb drives. This is followed by human error such as sending a medical report to the wrong recipient or losing a laptop. Third most common is employee fraud. These three actions make up 86 per cent of all breaches of health related data, according to the report.
