Vail resorts has launched EpicMix Time, an expansion to its ski and snowboard app, EpicMix.
The app, currently under testing at Perisher, uses anonymous crowd-sourced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals to calculate and display up-to-the-minute chairlift and gondola line wait times for 55 core lifts and gondolas across 13,600 acres of skiable terrain in Colorado.
The app will debut during the 2015-16 winter season at the company’s four Colorado resorts, Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone.
Vail Resorts executive vice president and chief information officer, Robert Urwiler, said the app shows how the travel industry can incorporate technology into the guest experience.
“Providing real-time lift line wait times is a first for the ski industry,” he said.
“Similar to apps showing traffic flow, like Google Maps or Waze, we’re applying unique analytics to aggregated, anonymous location data generated by smartphones and other mobile devices across the distinct topography and layout of our chairlifts to calculate reliable wait time information for our guests.”
After piloting the program in Colorado, Vail Resorts is looking to apply EpicMix Time to its other destinations including Utah and Michigan in upcoming ski seasons.
Vail Resorts plans to develop the app further to provide estimates for on-mountain restaurant and retail store wait times.
