Telecommunications vendor, Telstra, has launched a range of wearable devices that will be available in 370 Telstra stores across the country. According to the company, it is the first Australian telco to offer a dedicated wearables range in stores.
The company will be offering wearables from brands such as FitBit, Garmin, Jawbone, Samsung, Huawei and Striiv. It currently has 10 devices on range, and has expressed its intention to grow that number to 12 devices in the coming weeks.
Telstra device management director, Andrew Volard, said it decided to offer a wearables range as a result of growing customer demand and the potential that these devices offer.
“I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go in the consumer tech space and there’s no doubt in my mind that wearables are here to stay. They are the most exciting technology to launch since smartphones and have huge potential now and in the future to change the way we live,” he said.
Volard added that consumers can walk into their local Telstra shop, pick up a wearable, try it on and see if it works for them. He also said that Telstra will be able to help consumers find a wearable that suits their budget, lifestyle and smartphone – regardless of if it’s an Android or Apple.
“We’re starting to see a shift from wearables being just a fitness device to one that is for a person’s wellbeing and health. And so in the next few years, we’ll see a major move to an increase in sensors on devices and various devices that Telstra can potentially take to market.”
As an incentive for Telstra users with an existing Go Mobile Plan, the company will be offering these consumers the option to pay off the price of the wearable in instalments over 12 or 24 months.
