Optus unveils Netflix streaming deal

Offers new and re-contracting customers six months free access to the service

Optus has inked a deal with US streaming giant Netflix to provide customers with six months free access to the service - providing they are either new or re-contracting customers.

Available from 24 March, when Netflix launches in Australia, until 5 July, customers who sign up to a home broadband bundle on a $60 plan or above, on a 24 month contract; a postpaid mobile service on a $60 plan or above, on a 24 month contract; or a postpaid mobile broadband service on a $30 plan or above, on a 24 month contract, will all have access to the service.

It is also giving prepaid customers a three month subscription when they purchase any prepaid phone or mobile broadband device and activate the included SIM.

Allen Lew, Optus chief executive, Allan Lew, said that while many Australians prefer to watch their favourite TV show or the latest movies from the comfort of their home, they also wanted portable content for their smartphones.

"With our subscription offer, we’re giving customers all the entertainment they need in the one place, and the freedom to watch what they want, when they want it.”

From 17 April, Optus fixed home broadband customers will be able to stream as much Netflix content as they want, without metering.

While Optus Fetch TV customers can access Netflix through the app on their Fetch TV second Generation set top box.

The deal follows Telstra's reseller agreement with Foxtel and Seven West to offer the Presto streaming service and Vodafone's Stan offering as part of its data sharing plans.

Optus My Plan Plus customers will be offered automatic data top ups for $10 per extra GB.

Lew said partnering with the world’s largest and most recognised internet TV service was a significant milestone for Optus, "as we look to bring a more superior TV experience to customers across our fixed and mobile platforms,” he said.

To get started, customers must sign up for an eligible plan between March 24 and July 5 2015 and activate their service.

Once customers have activated their service they’ll receive a link to Optus’ Netflix page, where they can reclaim their unique Netflix subscription code.

Using their code customers can sign-up for their three or six month subscription via the Netflix website.
