3Com brings Quake into the strategy


As part of its drive to increase retail market share, 3Com is using the immense popularity of real time strategy games to lure buyers to its US Robotics 56K Voice/Fax Modem.

Aiming to reinforce an announcement made in June about its ambitions to improve retail modem market share from 5 to 30 per cent, 3Com have partnered with games distributor Activision to deliver a bundle it hopes will entice more consumers to look at the product.

Major retail accounts such as Harvey Norman and OfficeWorks will be offering a full working version of Activision's best selling title - Quake II - free with every purchase of the 56K voice fax modem which is one of 3Com's most popular modem products.

Pieter Vanderschaar, product marketing manager for 3Com Australia and New Zealand, told ARN this week that this is the first of many bundles and promotions it will be offering to achieve its market share goals.

"This is just the first of many offers we are planning in the lead-up to Christmas. We are looking at all sorts of products that are enabled by Internet connection hardware with a view to increasing brand awareness and market leadership," said Vanderschaar.

Vanderschaar also indicated that initial results from the heightened retail push are on target. He said that there is a set growth plan which 3Com is aiming to achieve and that the first set of figures has matched expectations.

Distributed by Tech Pacific, Teksel and RHP, the 3Com US Robotics 56K voice fax modem and Quake II bundle is retailing for $259 while stocks last.
