"Data lakes" gain momentum for Big Data discovery

EMC and Pivotal Deliver scale-out data lake for predictive Big Data analytics

"Data lakes" are gaining momentum as scalable repositories for critical data to be used for predictive Big Data analytics, according to EMC.

EMC’s scale-out Data Lake is designed to be enterprise ready to help organisations derive immediate business value from Big Data.

The company has partnered Pivotal to Deliver complete Scale-Out Data Lake for Predictive Big Data Analytics

EMC’s Big Data Hadoop Bundle accelerates customers’ predictive Big Data initiatives with an optimised configuration of scale out storage, scale out compute and Big Data analytics software.

Earlier this year, EMC and Pivotal announced the first incarnation of the Data Lake Hadoop Bundle, linking enterprise Hadoop and predictive analytics with enterprise scale-out storage.

The Data Lake Hadoop Bundle 2.0 includes EMC’s Data Computing Appliance (DCA), a high-performance Big Data computing appliance that drastically simplifies deployment and scaling of Hadoop and advanced analytics.

The bundle is designed to help organisations accelerate the value of Hadoop Big Data initiatives in the enterprise while keeping acquisition and management costs lower than solutions assembled with disparate parts.

It is comprised of a pre-tested, high performance Big Data analytic system featuring EMC storage and advanced analytics on Hadoop through enterprise appliances, enabling a single, focused and easy to implement solution.

IDC research director, Ashish Nadkarni, said EMC and Pivotal were offering tremendous value where customers needed it most.

"Combining storage, compute and analytics capabilities for scale-out Data Lakes is tremendously valuable in this age of Big Data—and the addition of predictive functionality means that customers can quickly put this solution to good use to help positively impact their bottom line,” he said.

EMC president, products and marketing, Jeremy Burton, said Big Data was top of mind in organisations worldwide.

"But for so many businesses, this means they’re concerned about how to store it and harness its value," he said.

"This bundled offering from EMC and Pivotal addresses the needs of customers today as they’re building their scale-out Data Lakes and offers a high performance system for leveraging Hadoop for Big Data analytics.

"It’s truly a turnkey, end-to-end solution designed to effectively command huge amounts of data.”

Pivotal president, Scott Yara, said there were so many opportunities in Big Data, provided companies had the tools to effectively use it.

"By offering compute, storage and analytics capabilities for Data Lakes in a single bundle, EMC and Pivotal are enabling customers to really capture the value of Big Data," he said.

"We’re working to make it more accessible for everyone, right out of the gate.”
