PC vendor Acer has struck up a deal with Wi-Fi infrastructure provider SkyNetGlobal to bundle wireless Internet access with Acer's Wi-Fi-enabled products.
Acer's Wi-Fi-enabled notebook PCs (TravelMate 360 series), handheld computers (n20w series) and Tablet PCs (Travelmate C100 series) will be bundled with marketing collateral that offers end users a free three-month subscription to SkyNetGlobal's access service. This subscription is valued at approximately $297 based on a 10-hour usage per month plan.
ASX-listed SkyNetGlobal has installed wireless infrastructure at airport lounges and hotels in Australia and is expanding into the Asia-Pacific region. This expansion comes largely on the back of a cash injection from telecommunications giant Telstra, which purchased the wireless infrastructure assets of SkyNetGlobal for $3.3 million in August.
Antonio Leone, product manager for portable and handheld PCs at Acer Computer Australia, said the agreement will differentiate Acer's Wi-Fi-enabled products and result in increased sales for Acer resellers. He said that the bundle creates a "no-hassle" approach for resellers to introduce customers to wireless technology.
Leone said resellers would not be concerned about missing out on a cut of the wireless access services revenues, as there are not many wireless infrastructure providers selling access services through the IT channel.
