Shadow IT is posing a significant challenge for organisations today, according to LogMeIn.
Channel development vice president, Ted Roller, said a lot of the difficult stems from the growth of Bring-Your-Own-Application (BYOA).
“It’s an interesting problem in that people don’t know they have it, but when they find out sometimes it is a little too late,” he said.
LogMeIn interviewed its channel partners for research on the topic, and respondents were asked how many apps they thought their individual customers had deployed without IT provision on the network.
The average number from those polled was three, but the actual number from the research was closer to 21.
“It was seven times the number that channel partners expected it to be, which suggests the problem with BYOA is people not realising what a big problem it really is,” Roller said.
Asia Pacific vice-president, Andy Farquharson, said Australian adoption of these types of productivity apps in the workforce is just as strong, if not stronger, than in North America and Europe.
“A lot of IT managers in these businesses are not fully aware of the scope and size of this problem they are facing,” he said.
Channel to the rescue
Roller said the channel plays an important role in addressing this awareness gap with its customers.
“Over the next few years channel partners are going to take a far more active role and take advantage of a broader set of tools in order to help manage Cloud engagement across the board,” he said.
Not only do partners and resellers need to leverage the tools available to then, Roller said they also need to undergo a transformation.
“They need to position themselves more in a CIO type of role, and education is a big part of that,” he said.
