National Broadband Network (NBN) related job vacancies have increase by 248 per cent in the six months since NBN Co submitted its Strategic Review but this has contributed an overflow of IT professionals looking for positions, according to job search Web site, Indeed.
Not all the vacancies are directly connected to the NBN Co itself; while the infrastructure company has experienced a 23 per cent growth in job vacancies itself, the big market players are rushing to hire staff with these specific skills.
For example, iiNet signed onto NBN Co’s Wholesale Broadband Agreement in April and is hiring aggressively in that space; there has been a 47 per cent rise in iiNet jobs over the past six months.
“Many IT and telecommunications companies would have been waiting for the Government’s report to be published before investing in the technical skills needed to fulfil their contracts with the NBN,” Indeed Australia country manager, Chris McDonald, said.
“Now that these companies have a better understanding of how the project is going to progress, whey can look to find the right talent to ensure they are delivering the best solutions.”
Citing the latest Skills Indicator Report from Clarius and Independent Economics, Indeed said that Australia is experience an overflow of 1800 IT workers and an oversupply of 500 IT managers. This is attributed to businesses and government reducing investment in new technology, and offshoring.
Indeed’s data correlates; the company claims searches in the telco space are rising, while networking job searches have increased by 124 per cent, and NBN searches have jumped 30 per cent since the Strategic Review.
“Given the current oversupply of IT professionals in Australia, job hunters with these skills should look to the NBN project as a buoyant sector in the technology jobs market,” McDonald said.
