Communications Alliance welcomes the second red tape 'Repeal Day'

Alliance flags changes to international mobile roaming standard

Australia's peak telecommunications industry body has welcomed a federal government consultation paper, which foreshadows the Government's second red tape Repeal Day.

The first Repeal Day saw the introduction of the red tape reduction omnibus bill, which was designed to reduce the volume of regulation, eliminate duplication between state and federal governments, improve consultation with business and ensure greater transparency and efficiency within the public service.

Communications Alliance CEO, John Stanton, said the deregulatory measures in the paper reflected submissions made to the Government by the Communications Alliance and service providers, as well as the output of discussions held with communications minister Malcolm Turnbull, parliamentary secretary, Paul Fletcher, and the Department of Communications over recent months.

He said the Alliance would respond to the paper and look to develop additional proposed initiatives that would also help to lighten the ‘red-tape burden’ on industry and benefit consumers.

“We are exploring, for example, whether the success of the first tranche of consumer information measures under the recently introduced International Mobile Roaming Standard might make the additional proposed requirements of that Standard unnecessary,” he said.

Mr Stanton said it was important that all stakeholders work to maintain the current deregulatory momentum.
